Instruction will be provided using a mixture of teaching videos for lesson introductions, live classes for instruction and review by Zoom, audio files for recitation practice, and online flashcard-type activities for students to practice on their own. Students will have assignments which need to be completed between classes which will include grammar concepts, writing assignments, and recitation of jingles. The Shurley English Homeschool Kit materials will be needed (Workbook, Teacher’s Manual, Instructional CD) so that daily assignments and tests can be corrected at home in order to ensure real-time feedback on work for students. Parents should be aware that priority in instruction will favor mastery of material and reasonableness of pace, so the instructional approach may be modified over time based on what seems best for the students involved. I currently anticipate 1 live lesson time per week with supplemental video lessons as needed.
DETAILS: Classes will be on Thursdays at 11-11:45am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lockport, NY. Zoom option may be offered if wi-fi access permits. Cost for the year: $80 for 28 weeks of instruction. Starts 9/16. Shurley English Level 5 can provide an appropriate challenge for students in grades 4, 5, or 6.
MATERIALS: Shurley English Level 5 Practice Booklet and Shurley English Level 5 Homeschool Kit, which includes the Student Workbook, Teacher’s Manual, and Instructional CD (with Jingles and Introductory Sentences)
* Additionally, students will need access to a dictionary and thesaurus.
* Optional: Parents may wish to also purchase the Practice CDs, which contain audio files of the sentences in the Practice Booklet which can allow the student to work somewhat independently with the CD to classify and check the sentences. Students who have done Shurley English before will likely not need these Practice CDs.

Instruction will be provided using a mixture of teaching videos for lesson introductions, live classes for instruction and review by Zoom and in person when possible, audio files for recitation practice, and online flashcard activities for students to practice on their own. Students will have assignments which need to be completed between classes which will give them practice every day. Students will need at least a few minutes of practice each day to make progress and achieve mastery as intended. The Second Form Teacher Key (for workbook, quizzes, and tests) will be needed at home in addition to the Second Form Student Workbook and Second Form Student Text so that daily assignments can be corrected at home in order to ensure real-time feedback on work for students.
Parents should be aware that priority in instruction will favor mastery of material and reasonableness of pace, so it is possible that we will not complete all of the Second Form Latin materials within the school year if that is what seems best for the students involved. I anticipate 2 lesson times per week, but one of those may be a teaching video rather than live, with the plan being to adjust instruction as needed based on what is most helpful to the students in the class.

With history, literature, and theology wrapped into one discussion course, the “all-encompassing” Omnibus II curriculum by Veritas Press explores literature relating to World Medieval times from a Christian worldview. This class seeks to help students grow through reading great works while they also grow in the ability to contribute to good discussion related to the books being read.
· Assignments anticipate that each week students will spend 1 to 1 ½ hours reading/preparing on each of the three weekdays the class does not meet in order to be ready to enjoy participating in scheduled discussions. Dialectic students (Grades 7-9) will be building independence in completing readings, building comprehension skills, and applying what they read in ever improving discussion skills. Rhetoric students (Grades 10-12) will be doing these things as well as leading the way in recognizing ideas and philosophies and analyzing them from a Christian worldview. Since our goal is to enjoy challenging ourselves with these great works, the work load may be modified for students at different levels in a way that will still allow for fruitful group discussion, and parent input is welcomed and encouraged.
· Discussion classes will take place on Zoom and in person when possible. Students will have readings which need to be completed between classes and will be expected to come prepared to engage in discussion by making use of assignments related to the readings. Parents should be aware that priority in instruction will favor a balance between appropriate level of challenge and appropriate level of enjoyment, so it is possible that individual students will have different modifications in their day to day interaction with this material.
